I hated leaving Kailee, even if I felt better knowing she was in my bed and not her own. I sat in the parking lot letting my car warm-up, the September night air turning cooler by the day. I was putting my car in reverse when my phone rang through the car speaker's and Dane's name flashed across the screen. "Hey bro," I said answering the phone " how's the OP going?" He asked and I could hear metal clanking in the background signaling he was cleaning weapons. "Better than expected in some ways, more complicated in others," I told him honestly. Dane was basically my best friend; it was hard to get anything past him. "oh yeah Luke mentioned you had a distraction" he chuckled. I rolled my eyes "when have you ever known me to be distracted?" I asked "touche" he replied and I laughed "are you at the office," I asked him trying to pay attention to the dimly lit road that led to Sal's warehouse. "Of course, it's my on-call night. What are you doing out so late" he asked as the engine revved in the background. "Meeting with the mark, this guy has zero concept of time, but can you do me a favor" I paused "I'd do it myself but I don't want Luke to find out right away". Dane let out a groan "What have you gotten yourself into now?" He asked and I rubbed a hand down my face "I need you to do a comprehensive background check on Justin Flynn, he's twenty-six, lived in Layton County his whole life" I said as stoic as possible. "I'd also like to get a team to sit on the apartment complex I'm staying at, not 24/7 just nights," I said quickly and I heard Dane typing "think you've been made?" He asked in a serious tone and I chuckled "Nah man I've covered my tracks, remember the guy I told you about? My friend from way back whose dad owns the apartments," I asked "Yeah Cristiano Rossi's kid" I scoffed, of course, that's the name he would remember. "Well, he has a daughter too" I paused and Dane sucked in a breath "No shit" I chuckled "yeah surprised the hell out of me too but she lives in the building, Flynn is her ex, borderline psychotic, but he's been breaking into the building or has someone breaking in and they need proof" I finished and Dane laughed "so she's the distraction huh?" I groaned "I'm fucked man" I finally admitted and Dane laughed. "At least you'll be out of there soon," he said and I stayed quiet. "You don't understand what I mean," I said changing my tone and he stopped laughing "what the hell Montgomery, you told her didn't you," he asked, cursing under his breath. "Yes, I didn't mean for it to happen. She saw my badge and freaked out. I don't know man, there is something about her, I couldn't just let her walk away" I said with a sigh.
